Faux Pockets Are All the Rage!

There are some trends you just can’t imagine ever catching on. For instance, when I first saw a faux pocket, I thought it was stupid. I thought it was something a few people would wear. When my wife brought home some new clothes for my son and half of them had faux pockets, I realized the trend was here to stay.

So jumping on the faux pockets bandwagon, I started thinking of designs that I would rock. I looked for some patterns that I thought would be interesting but nothing came to mind. Then it hit me. I would do the carpet pattern from the hotel in the movie The Shining! Great, one down – but I wanted to do a few. I thought it would be cool to have some sort of tentacles sticking out of the faux pocket so I found an image of a tentacle, masked it and added it to my argyle. Next I pulled out a Piston Design I did awhile back and thought it would look cool on a metallic pocket. Why not, right?

I loaded the ColorPrint Easy into the VersaCAMM and printed the designs and waited for it to cut the included cutlines. And I waited and waited. Nothing. So I redid the cutline and tried again. Nothing. So to save face and not waste the materials, I broke out the Xacto knife and started cutting by hand. In case you’re wondering, the tentacle design wasn’t as much fun as you think it was.

After I hand cut all the faux pockets, I masked them with TTD Easy Mask. Make sure you check out the video we did for masking and applying ColorPrint Easy.

Next, I applied the faux pockets to the shirts using a trusty heat press. The designs went on smoothly and I peeled the carrier away revealing the faux pocket awesomeness below!

And here we have two of the final designs. I didn’t like the piston design as much as I thought I would so I scrapped that project. Don’t think you’re limited to ColorPrint Easy for your faux pockets though.

There are a number of ideas and materials you could use. How about a solid color EasyWeed faux pocket? You could even do one in white EasyWeed and outline it in black, giving it a hand drawn appearance… make other things come out of the pockets. Maybe try a printed pocket protector (say that 5 times fast!) with pens and pencils sticking out. The possibilites and the material choices are endless. Just grab some material and give it a try.
